Two phones can look exactly the same and have very different prices. Often the difference is simple: one was imported officially for Bangladesh, the other came in through another channel. Since BTRC introduced the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR), this difference matters more than ever, because a phone's IMEI decides whether it can be used on local networks.
What "official" and "unofficial" really mean
- Official: imported or assembled by the brand's authorised distributor, with the IMEI registered in Bangladesh and a local brand warranty.
- Unofficial: brought in from another country through a different channel. The phone itself may be genuine, but the local brand warranty usually does not apply, and the IMEI may not be registered.
Neither label tells you whether the phone is fake. A copy or refurbished phone can be sold under either label, so always check the device itself as well.
Step 1: Find the IMEI
Dial *#06# on the phone. The 15-digit IMEI appears on screen. Dual-SIM phones show two numbers. Compare them with the IMEI printed on the box and on the sticker or tray. They must match.
Step 2: Check it with BTRC
BTRC lets anyone check an IMEI. At the time of writing, you can send an SMS in the format KYD <IMEI> to 16002, or use the NEIR website (neir.btrc.gov.bd). The reply tells you whether the IMEI is valid and registered. If BTRC changes the process, follow its current instructions.
Step 3: Look at the box and the paperwork
- An official phone normally has the local distributor's sticker and a warranty card or e-warranty registration.
- Check the model number in Settings → About phone. Regional variants have different model codes, and some bands or features can differ.
- Ask the seller in writing what warranty you get and who provides it: the brand, or the shop.
Step 4: Check the phone itself
- Open Settings → About phone and confirm storage and RAM match the box.
- Test both SIM slots, calls, mobile data, WiFi, cameras, speakers and charging before you leave the shop.
- Look for signs of a previous owner: scratches on the ports, an unusually low battery health reading, or accounts still logged in.
Which one should you buy?
If you want the brand warranty and no network surprises, choose official. If you choose an unofficial phone to save money, make sure the IMEI checks out and you know exactly what warranty the shop offers.
