DDR4 vs DDR5 RAM: Differences and How Much You Need

DDR4 vs DDR5 RAM: Differences and How Much You Need

By Mega Buy Bd | Category - Desktop PC & Components

Summary: DDR4 vs DDR5 RAM for desktop PCs explained: speed, compatibility, which CPUs use each, current prices in Bangladesh and whether 16GB or 32GB is right for you.

Choosing between DDR4 vs DDR5 RAM for a new desktop or an upgrade? This guide is for PC builders and office buyers in Bangladesh who want to know what really changes and how much memory to get. The short answer: your motherboard decides, not you, because DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. For a budget Intel build on a DDR4 board, 16GB of DDR4 is still excellent value. For any new AMD AM5 or Intel Core Ultra build, DDR5 is the only option, and 16GB is the minimum while 32GB is the comfortable target for gaming and creative work.

What Is the Difference Between DDR4 and DDR5?

DDR5 is the newer generation of desktop memory. It is not just faster; the design of the module changed.

  • Speed: mainstream DDR4 desktop kits usually run at 3200 to 3600 MT/s. DDR5 starts at 4800 MT/s, and common kits today run 5200 to 6000 MT/s or higher.
  • Voltage: DDR4 standard voltage is 1.2V; DDR5 is 1.1V.
  • Power management: DDR5 modules carry their own power management chip (PMIC) on the stick instead of relying fully on the motherboard.
  • Channels: each DDR5 stick is split into two independent 32-bit subchannels, which helps when many tasks access memory at once.
  • Capacity per stick: DDR5 comes in larger single modules, including 24GB and 48GB sizes that DDR4 never had.
  • Latency: DDR5 has higher CAS latency numbers, but because it runs much faster, real-world latency ends up similar.

Can DDR5 go into a DDR4 slot?

No. Both use 288-pin desktop modules, but the notch is in a different position, so a DDR5 stick physically will not fit a DDR4 slot and vice versa. Every motherboard supports one or the other, never both at the same time.

Which Platforms Use Which RAM?

AMD

  • AM4 (Ryzen 1000 to 5000 series): DDR4 only.
  • AM5 (Ryzen 7000, 8000 and 9000 series): DDR5 only.

Intel

  • 10th and 11th gen: DDR4 only.
  • 12th, 13th and 14th gen (LGA1700): the processor supports both, but each motherboard supports only one. A board name with "D4" or "DDR4" uses DDR4.
  • Core Ultra 200S (LGA1851): DDR5 only.

That LGA1700 flexibility is why many budget builds in Bangladesh still pair a Core i3-12100 or i5-12400F with an H610 or B760 DDR4 board: the cheaper RAM keeps the total down.

Does DDR5 Make a Real Difference?

In games, the gain from DDR5 over good DDR4 is usually modest, often within a few percent, because the graphics card is the main limit. The difference grows in CPU-heavy titles, at high frame rates and in workloads that move a lot of data, such as video export, 3D rendering, compiling code and large spreadsheets.

Systems using integrated graphics, such as Ryzen 8000G APUs, benefit more from fast memory, because the graphics chip uses system RAM.

The honest conclusion: do not pick a platform just for DDR5. Pick the processor and board that fit your budget and use, then buy the RAM type that board needs.

How Much RAM Do You Need in a Desktop?

  • 8GB: only for basic office PCs, billing counters and browsing. Already tight with Windows 11.
  • 16GB: the minimum for a gaming or home PC. Fine for most 1080p games and everyday multitasking.
  • 32GB: the comfortable choice for modern gaming with Discord and a browser open, streaming, video editing and programming.
  • 64GB and up: 4K video editing, 3D, virtual machines and data work.

How to Choose Desktop RAM

1. Use two sticks for dual channel

Two matching sticks (for example 2 x 8GB or 2 x 16GB) run in dual channel and deliver much more bandwidth than one stick. Install them in the slots the motherboard manual recommends, usually the second and fourth slots from the CPU (often labelled A2 and B2).

2. Prefer two sticks over four

Especially with DDR5, four sticks often force lower speeds. If you want 64GB, 2 x 32GB is generally more stable than 4 x 16GB.

3. Turn on XMP or EXPO

RAM runs at a slow default speed until you enable its profile in BIOS. Intel boards call it XMP; AMD boards call it EXPO (many also support XMP). One setting is all it takes to get the speed you paid for.

4. Check the motherboard's supported list

Most kits work, but the board maker's memory support list (QVL) shows tested modules. It is worth checking for high-speed DDR5 kits.

5. Expect a longer first boot with DDR5

New DDR5 systems spend time training memory on the first start and sometimes after BIOS updates. A black screen for a minute or two is normal; do not switch it off.

What About Laptops?

Laptops use smaller SO-DIMM sticks, or memory soldered to the board. The same rule applies: you can only use the type the laptop was designed for. Many business laptops from 12th gen Intel and Ryzen 6000 onward use DDR5. Two examples from our stock are the HP EliteBook 840 G9 Core i5 12th Gen, 16GB DDR5, 512GB SSD at 54,400 Tk and the HP EliteBook 845 G9 Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U, 16GB, 512GB SSD at 64,900 Tk (prices at the time of writing; the product page shows the latest price).

Finish the Desk: Monitor and Backup Power

Fast RAM is wasted on a blurry old screen. A 23.8-inch IPS Full HD panel is the sweet spot for most desktops, such as the Dahua LM24-A221Y 23.8 inch 144Hz IPS monitor at 11,400 Tk. Browse all sizes on our monitor page or the PC Power monitor range. During load shedding, a desktop needs a proper PC UPS, and a mini DC UPS keeps your WiFi router online; our mini UPS buying guide explains how to size one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I wait for DDR5 prices to fall before building?

If your budget is tight, a DDR4 board with an Intel 12th to 14th gen processor gives excellent performance today at a lower total cost. If you want an AM5 or Core Ultra system for a long upgrade path, buy DDR5 now with 16GB and add a matching kit later, or wait if you are not in a hurry.

Can I mix two different RAM brands?

It often works if type, speed and voltage match, but it is not guaranteed, especially with DDR5 at high speeds. The safest choice is a single matched kit. If you must mix, set both to the speed of the slower stick and test stability before relying on the PC for work.

Is 16GB DDR4 enough for gaming in 2026?

For most 1080p games, 16GB in dual channel (2 x 8GB) is enough. Some recent big titles use more than 16GB with a browser and Discord running, causing stutter. If your budget allows, 32GB is the safer long-term choice, but a better graphics card matters more than extra RAM for frame rates.

Does RAM speed matter for office PCs?

Very little. For Office, accounting software and browsing, the amount of RAM and having an SSD matter far more than speed. A 3200 MT/s DDR4 kit is perfectly fine. Spend the savings on 16GB instead of 8GB and a good monitor.
