What is HBM memory? HBM, or High Bandwidth Memory, is a type of DRAM that is stacked in layers and placed right next to a processor, so data can move between them extremely fast. You will not find it in a normal laptop or phone; it lives inside AI accelerators and data-centre GPUs from Nvidia and AMD. But it matters to every buyer in Bangladesh, because the race to make HBM is one big reason RAM, SSD and phone prices went up in 2026.
This explainer covers how HBM works, how it compares with the DDR5 and GDDR memory in your own PC, who makes it, and what it means for your next laptop or phone purchase.
What Is HBM Memory and How Does It Work?
Normal computer memory sits on a stick (DDR5) or as separate chips around a graphics card (GDDR7). Each chip connects through a fairly narrow data path, so to get more speed, makers push each wire to run faster.
HBM takes the opposite approach. Several DRAM dies are stacked on top of each other, often 8, 12 or even 16 layers high, and connected with thousands of tiny vertical channels called through-silicon vias (TSVs). The stack sits on the same package as the GPU, joined by a silicon interposer. Because the stack is so close and has a very wide connection, it can move huge amounts of data while each wire runs at a modest speed.
Wide, not just fast
The simplest way to picture it: DDR5 is a fast two-lane road; HBM is a slower but enormous 1,000- or 2,000-lane highway. Under the JEDEC standards, HBM3E stacks use a 1,024-bit interface, and the newer HBM4 standard, published in 2025, doubles that to 2,048 bits. One HBM4 stack can deliver around 2 TB/s or more of bandwidth.
HBM vs DDR5 vs GDDR7: Quick Comparison
| Memory | Where it is used | Typical bandwidth | Main strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| DDR5 (desktop, two channels) | PCs and laptops | About 90–100 GB/s | Large capacity, low cost, upgradeable |
| LPDDR5X | Phones, thin laptops | Roughly 70–135 GB/s per device | Low power |
| GDDR7 | Gaming graphics cards | Up to about 1.8 TB/s on a top card | High speed at consumer prices |
| HBM3E / HBM4 | AI and data-centre GPUs | 1–3 TB/s per stack, several stacks per GPU | Extreme bandwidth per watt |
Figures are approximate and depend on the exact product. The key point: a single AI accelerator with eight HBM stacks can have many times more memory bandwidth than an entire high-end gaming PC.
Why AI Needs HBM
Large AI models are huge collections of numbers (weights). Every time a chatbot writes a word, the GPU must read a large part of those weights from memory. The calculation itself is quick; waiting for data is the slow part. That is why the AI industry describes memory bandwidth as the real bottleneck, and why each new generation of AI chips carries more and faster HBM.
Memory makers' own announcements show how fast this is moving. In February 2026, as reported by The Register, Samsung said it had started mass production of HBM4 with speeds up to 11.7 Gbps per pin, and Micron said it was in high-volume production with its 2026 output already sold. SK hynix, the long-time HBM leader, has said its HBM4 runs at over 10 Gbps per pin. Nvidia's next platform, Rubin, is built around HBM4.
The three big makers
- SK hynix: widely reported to be the largest HBM supplier and Nvidia's main partner.
- Samsung: the world's biggest DRAM maker overall, pushing hard to catch up in HBM4.
- Micron: the US maker, also shipping HBM4 in volume.
China's CXMT is growing quickly in standard DRAM and is reported to be developing HBM, but it is not yet a major HBM supplier.
Why HBM Made Your RAM and SSD More Expensive
HBM is far more profitable than ordinary memory, and making it uses a lot of factory capacity. Micron has said HBM takes roughly three times the wafer supply per bit compared with standard DDR5. When memory makers shift production lines to HBM and server memory, less is left for PCs, phones and SSDs.
Market trackers recorded the effect through 2026. TrendForce raised its forecast for PC DRAM contract price increases in early 2026 to record levels, and TweakTown, citing SigmaIntel data, reported that LPDDR5X prices jumped as much as 89% in the second quarter. Laptop and phone makers have passed part of these costs on to buyers.
How to Choose RAM and Storage Wisely in 2026
You will never buy HBM directly, but its ripple effects should change how you shop:
- Buy enough RAM at the start. 16GB is the sensible minimum for a Windows laptop in 2026. Our 8GB vs 16GB RAM guide explains why.
- Know your memory type. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable; see our DDR4 vs DDR5 comparison.
- Consider a quality used laptop. Business laptops that already include 16GB RAM and an SSD avoid today's high upgrade prices.
- For graphics cards, look at VRAM size. Gaming GPUs use GDDR, not HBM; our graphics card buying guide covers how much you need.
- Plan builds with current prices. Memory and SSD costs move quickly, so check our PC build price guide before you budget.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy HBM memory for my PC?
No. HBM is not sold as a separate stick or chip for consumers. It is built into the same package as a GPU or accelerator at the factory, mainly for AI and data-centre products. Desktop PCs use DDR4 or DDR5 modules, laptops use DDR5 or LPDDR5X, and gaming graphics cards use GDDR6 or GDDR7.
Is HBM faster than GDDR7?
Per stack and per watt, yes. HBM moves data over a much wider connection, and AI GPUs combine several stacks for total bandwidth far beyond any gaming card. GDDR7 is cheaper and easier to build around, which is why gaming graphics cards use it. For games, GDDR7 is more than fast enough today.
What is the difference between HBM3E and HBM4?
HBM4 doubles the interface width from 1,024 to 2,048 bits per stack under the JEDEC standard, so each stack can deliver roughly twice the bandwidth at similar pin speeds. It also allows taller stacks with more capacity. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron all began shipping HBM4 in 2026 for next-generation AI chips.
Will RAM prices go down soon?
Nobody can promise a date. Market reports through 2026 point to tight supply because factories favour HBM and server memory, and some analysts do not expect normal prices before 2028. If you need a laptop or upgrade now, buying a model with enough RAM already installed is usually cheaper than upgrading later.
