CXMT DRAM Market Share Hits 10%: What It Means for RAM Prices

CXMT DRAM Market Share Hits 10%: What It Means for RAM Prices

By Mega Buy Bd | Category - Tech Trends

Summary: CXMT DRAM market share reached about 10% in Q2 2026. See who CXMT is, why China's memory maker grew so fast and what it could mean for RAM and laptop prices.

CXMT DRAM market share has reached about 10% of the global memory market, according to Counterpoint Research's figures for the second quarter of 2026. That makes China's ChangXin Memory Technologies the fourth-largest DRAM maker in the world, behind Samsung, SK hynix and Micron. For buyers in Bangladesh, the short answer is this: a strong fourth supplier could ease memory prices over time, but it will not make RAM, laptops or phones cheap overnight.

Below we explain who CXMT is, what the 10% figure really measures, why it happened so fast, and what it could mean for the price of your next laptop, phone or RAM upgrade.

Who Is CXMT?

CXMT (ChangXin Memory Technologies) is a DRAM maker based in Hefei, China, founded in 2016. DRAM is the working memory inside every PC, laptop, phone and server. For years the market was controlled by three companies: Samsung and SK hynix of South Korea, and Micron of the United States. CXMT is the first Chinese company to build DRAM at a scale that shows up clearly in global rankings.

The company makes DDR4, DDR5 and LPDDR memory for PCs, phones and servers. Under US export rules it cannot buy the most advanced chip-making tools, so its manufacturing is generally considered a step behind the three leaders.

CXMT DRAM Market Share: What the Numbers Say

Counterpoint Research published its quarterly DRAM and HBM ranking for Q2 2026 with CXMT at about 10%, up from roughly 8% in the first quarter and about 4% a year earlier. Counterpoint also described CXMT as the fastest-growing DRAM supplier, with revenue up several times over year on year as memory prices climbed.

CompanyCountryApprox. share, Q2 2026 (Counterpoint)
SamsungSouth Korea38–39%
SK hynixSouth Korea25–26%
MicronUSA24–25%
CXMTChinaAbout 10%

Counterpoint's pages give slightly different figures for the top three, which is why we show ranges. Another tracker, TrendForce, had CXMT at 7.6% of DRAM revenue in Q1 2026 and close to 10% in Q2, so the two firms broadly agree on the trend.

Revenue share is not the same as chip share

Market share can be measured by revenue (money earned) or by bits (amount of memory shipped). The 10% headline is a revenue-based figure. Counterpoint's separate bit-share estimates for CXMT in mid-2026 were a little lower, around 8–9%. Either way, the direction is clear: CXMT is taking a real slice of the market.

Why CXMT Grew So Fast

  • A memory shortage. AI data centres are buying huge amounts of HBM and server memory. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron moved factory capacity towards those products, leaving less standard DRAM for PCs and phones. Any supplier with spare output could sell it at high prices.
  • Chinese demand. Chinese phone and PC makers have strong reasons to buy local memory. TrendForce has reported a large multi-year supply deal between CXMT and ByteDance.
  • Fresh capital. CXMT listed on Shanghai's STAR Market on 27 July 2026. TrendForce reported the IPO raised at least RMB 57.9 billion (about US$8.6 billion) and that the shares jumped more than 400% on the first day.
  • Expansion plans. Counterpoint reports CXMT plans to raise its monthly wafer output significantly by 2027, and TrendForce has reported it is also looking at NAND flash research.

What It Means for Laptop, Phone and RAM Prices

More competition is usually good for buyers. A fourth large DRAM maker means Samsung, SK hynix and Micron cannot set supply alone. Over the next few years, that could help bring standard memory prices down from their 2026 highs.

In the short term, expect little change. Global demand still exceeds supply, and CXMT's extra output is mostly absorbed by Chinese brands. Market reports through 2026 suggest tight supply could continue into 2027 or beyond.

There is also a geopolitical side. The US has placed restrictions on Chinese chip technology, and some Western governments and companies are cautious about Chinese memory in sensitive systems. For a home or office user in Bangladesh, this rarely matters; the memory brand inside a laptop is not something most buyers choose.

How to Choose a Laptop or Upgrade While Memory Is Expensive

  • Buy the RAM you need now. Upgrading later may cost more. Our 8GB vs 16GB RAM guide helps you decide.
  • Check the memory type. Old DDR4 and new DDR5 have moved differently in price. See our DDR4 vs DDR5 explainer.
  • Look at used business laptops. Models like the HP EliteBook already ship with 16GB RAM and an SSD, which avoids paying 2026 upgrade prices.
  • Budget PC builds carefully. RAM and SSD can now be a large share of a build; our PC build price guide shows realistic totals.
  • Phones: pick the storage you will need. Storage and RAM are soldered, so choose the right variant at purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does CXMT make?

CXMT makes DRAM, the short-term working memory used in computers, phones and servers. Its products include DDR4 and DDR5 for PCs and servers and LPDDR memory for phones and thin laptops. It is also reported to be developing HBM for AI chips, though it is not yet a major supplier of that type.

Is CXMT memory good quality?

Chinese PC and phone brands use CXMT memory in mass-market products, and module makers sell it under their own names. Its manufacturing technology is generally considered behind Samsung, SK hynix and Micron because of export restrictions, but for everyday office, study and home use, the memory brand inside a laptop rarely makes a noticeable difference.

Will CXMT make RAM cheaper in Bangladesh?

Possibly in the longer term. More supply and more competition usually push prices down. In the near term, global demand from AI data centres is still larger than supply, so most analysts do not expect quick relief. Local prices in Bangladesh also depend on import costs and the exchange rate.

Is the 10% figure CXMT's share of all memory?

No. It is CXMT's share of the DRAM market (Counterpoint includes HBM in its DRAM figures), measured by revenue, for the second quarter of 2026. It does not include NAND flash used in SSDs and phone storage. Share by number of bits shipped is a little lower, according to Counterpoint's separate estimates.
