True wireless earbuds have become the everyday headphone for most people. Prices range widely, and so does quality. These are the points that make the real difference.
1. Fit comes first
Earbuds that do not seal well sound thin and fall out. Look for models with several ear-tip sizes in the box. In-ear (silicone tip) designs block more noise; half-in-ear designs feel lighter but leak more sound.
2. ANC vs ENC
- ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) reduces the noise you hear: traffic, bus engines, fans. Useful for commuting and travel.
- ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation) reduces the noise the other person hears during calls. Useful if you take many calls outside.
Some earbuds have both. A transparency mode lets outside sound in when you need to hear announcements or traffic.
3. Battery life
Listings usually show two numbers: hours from the earbuds alone, and total hours with the charging case. ANC uses extra power, so check the battery figure with ANC on. Fast charging (a few minutes for an hour of play) is handy.
4. Bluetooth version and codecs
Bluetooth 5.x gives a stable connection. Codecs affect sound quality: AAC works well with iPhones, while LDAC and similar codecs offer more detail on supported Android phones. A low-latency or game mode helps the sound stay in sync with games and videos.
5. App, controls and multipoint
A companion app lets you change EQ and controls, and receive firmware updates. Multipoint lets the earbuds connect to a phone and a laptop at the same time and switch automatically.
6. Water and sweat resistance
For the gym or rain, look for at least an IPX4 rating. This means splash resistance, not swimming.
7. Know exactly what you are buying
Popular earbuds are widely copied. A clearly labelled copy can be a fair budget choice, but it is not the original and will not have the original features or warranty. Buy from a shop that names the product honestly.
