A smartwatch shows notifications, counts your steps and can even take calls from your wrist. With so many models available, focus on the features you will actually use every day.
1. Check compatibility with your phone
Most budget and mid-range smartwatches work with both Android and iPhone through a companion app. Some features, such as replying to messages, may only work on Android. Check the app's ratings and whether it is regularly updated.
2. Display: AMOLED or LCD
AMOLED screens have deeper blacks, better colours and often an always-on mode. LCD screens cost less and are fine indoors. Check brightness if you are outside a lot.
3. Bluetooth calling
Watches with a built-in microphone and speaker let you answer calls from your wrist while your phone stays in your bag. Handy while driving a bike or cooking, but the speaker is small, so it is best for short calls.
4. Battery life
Battery life depends on use: always-on display, calls and continuous heart-rate tracking all use more power. A watch that lasts several days on typical use is more convenient than one you charge every night.
5. Health and fitness tracking
- Steps, sleep and heart rate are standard.
- Blood oxygen (SpO2) and stress readings are estimates. They are useful for trends, not for medical decisions.
- Sports modes and built-in GPS matter if you run or cycle outdoors.
6. Water resistance
IP67/IP68 covers rain, sweat and hand washing. For swimming, look for a 5 ATM rating and check that the brand allows swimming with it. Avoid hot showers and saunas with any smartwatch.
7. Comfort and straps
Check the case size against your wrist and whether the strap uses a standard quick-release size, so you can change it later.
