Power Bank Buying Guide: Capacity, Fast Charging and Safety

Power Bank Buying Guide: Capacity, Fast Charging and Safety

By Mega Buy Bd | Category - Buying Guides

Summary: How much mAh do you need? What do PD and fast charging mean? A simple guide to choosing a safe power bank for your phone, tablet or laptop.

A power bank is one of the most useful accessories you can own, for travel, long days out, or simply when the power is off. Choosing one is easier when you understand a few terms.

1. Capacity (mAh): how much do you need?

The capacity printed on a power bank is measured at the battery cells. Because of conversion losses, you get roughly 60–70% of that number into your phone. A simple way to choose:

  • 10,000 mAh: light and pocket-friendly, usually enough for about one to two full phone charges.
  • 20,000 mAh: for travel or charging two devices, a bit heavier.
  • Higher capacities: useful for tablets, laptops or several days away from power.

Check your phone's battery size (in mAh) to estimate how many charges you will get.

2. Fast charging: PD and QC

  • PD (Power Delivery) over USB-C is the common standard for modern phones, iPhones and many laptops.
  • QC (Quick Charge) is used by many Android phones.
  • The wattage (for example 20W, 22.5W, 65W) shows how fast it can charge. Laptops usually need higher wattage PD output. Check what your device supports.
  • Use a good-quality cable; a weak cable can slow charging down.

3. Ports and extras

  • USB-C input and output (one cable for charging the power bank and your phone).
  • Number of ports, if you charge more than one device.
  • Display showing the remaining percentage.
  • Built-in cables or wireless charging for convenience.

4. Safety

  • Buy from trusted brands with protection against overcharge, overheating and short circuit.
  • Avoid leaving power banks in hot cars or direct sun.
  • For flights, airlines limit power bank capacity in cabin bags. Check your airline's rules before you travel.
