How to Fix Windows Update Errors in Windows 11 and 10

How to Fix Windows Update Errors in Windows 11 and 10

By Mega Buy Bd | Category - Tech Trends

Summary: How to fix Windows Update errors: run the troubleshooter, clearing the update cache, DISM and SFC, error codes and the repair reinstall that keeps your files.

Stuck with a failed update and wondering how to fix Windows Update errors? This guide is for Windows 11 and Windows 10 users in Bangladesh, whether you use a home laptop, an office PC or a used business laptop. The short answer: restart, make sure you have a stable connection and at least 20GB of free space, then run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If that fails, clear the update cache, repair system files with DISM and SFC, and as a last resort use the built-in Fix problems using Windows Update option, which reinstalls Windows while keeping your files and apps.

The steps below go from quickest to most involved. Try them in order and check for updates again after each one. All commands are based on Microsoft's own support guidance.

Why Windows Update Fails

Most update errors come from a handful of causes:

  • Low disk space on the C: drive, very common on laptops with 128GB or 256GB SSDs.
  • An unstable internet connection, a VPN or a metered connection setting.
  • A corrupted update cache left behind by an interrupted download, often after a power cut.
  • Damaged system files that stop the update from installing.
  • Third-party antivirus, old drivers or connected devices that block the installation.
  • Wrong date and time, which can break secure connections to Microsoft's servers.

Before you begin, back up important files. None of these steps should delete your data, but it is always wise to have a copy.

Quick Fixes to Try First

1. Restart the PC properly

Many updates need a restart to finish. Click Start > Power > Restart, or choose Update and restart if you see it. A restart clears pending operations that can block the next update.

2. Check your connection and turn off the VPN

Make sure you are connected and the connection is stable. Large updates can be several gigabytes, so a mobile hotspot with limited data may cut out halfway. Turn off any VPN while updating, and in Settings > Network & internet, check that your Wi-Fi is not set as a metered connection if you want updates to download freely.

3. Free up disk space

Microsoft says you need at least 16GB free on a 32-bit system or 20GB on a 64-bit system for some updates. Open Settings > System > Storage, use Cleanup recommendations and Temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and move large videos to an external drive.

4. Unplug extra devices

Disconnect external hard drives, USB docks, card readers and other accessories you do not need. Keep only the keyboard, mouse and charger connected, then try again.

5. Fix the date and time

Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically, then click Sync now. A laptop with a dead CMOS battery often loses the correct time, which can cause update and website errors.

How to Fix Windows Update Errors with Built-in Tools

6. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and click Run next to Windows Update. On newer builds this may open the Get Help app, which runs the same checks. Let it apply any fixes, restart and try updating again.

7. Clear the Windows Update cache

If downloads keep failing at the same point, the cached files may be corrupted. Open Command Prompt as administrator (search for cmd, right-click, Run as administrator) and run these commands one at a time:

  1. net stop bits
  2. net stop wuauserv
  3. ren %systemroot%\softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
  4. ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
  5. net start bits
  6. net start wuauserv

Restart the PC and check for updates. Windows rebuilds both folders automatically, so the next download starts fresh. If a rename fails with "access denied", make sure the services stopped successfully and that the window is running as administrator.

8. Repair system files with DISM and SFC

In an administrator Command Prompt, run:

  1. DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to finish (it can take a while and may pause at a percentage).
  2. sfc /scannow and wait until it reaches 100%.

DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source, so run DISM first. Restart and try Windows Update again.

9. Check the drive for errors

File system errors can also block updates. Run chkdsk /f C: in an administrator Command Prompt, type Y to schedule the check, and restart. If you suspect the drive itself is failing, check its S.M.A.R.T. health with a free tool such as CrystalDiskInfo and back up your files before going further.

10. Temporarily remove third-party antivirus

Some third-party security programs interfere with updates. Microsoft suggests temporarily uninstalling them, running the update and reinstalling afterwards. Windows Security stays active in the meantime, so you are still protected.

11. Update drivers

Old network or display drivers are a common cause of failed feature updates. Download the latest drivers from your laptop or motherboard maker's support website. For business laptops such as HP EliteBook or Dell Latitude, the maker's support page lists drivers by exact model.

Common Windows Update Error Codes

If Windows shows an error code, it points you towards the right fix. These are some of the codes Microsoft lists with suggested fixes:

Error codeLikely causeTry first
0x800f0922Not enough space or VPN connectionFree up space (step 3), turn off the VPN (step 2)
0x8007000dCorrupted update filesTroubleshooter (step 6), clear the cache (step 7)
0x80070002Missing files or interrupted updateRestart, troubleshooter, check disk space
0x80070005Access deniedUse an administrator account, pause third-party antivirus
0x800705b4Connection or security software timeoutCheck the connection, pause antivirus, restart
0x80240034Update service not running or download failedMake sure the Windows Update service runs, then troubleshooter
0xC1900101Driver problem during a feature updateUpdate or reinstall network and display drivers (step 11)

For any other code, search the exact code on Microsoft's support site. Microsoft's official Windows Update troubleshooting page is the best starting point.

Last-Resort Fixes

12. Install the update manually

If one specific update keeps failing, note its KB number from Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Search that KB number on the Microsoft Update Catalog website, download the package that matches your Windows version and system type (for example x64), and run it.

13. Use "Fix problems using Windows Update"

On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Recovery and click Reinstall now next to Fix problems using Windows Update. This reinstalls your current version of Windows and repairs system files while keeping your apps, files and settings. Keep the laptop plugged in and connected throughout. The option may not appear on work-managed PCs or on older Windows 11 versions.

14. Clean installation

If nothing else works, a clean installation of Windows from Microsoft's official installation media will fix software problems, but it removes your apps and files, so back up everything first.

How to Prevent Windows Update Problems

  • Keep 25GB or more free on the C: drive at all times.
  • Do not switch off the PC during an update, even if it looks stuck. Wait, or check if the disk light is still active.
  • Use a UPS or keep the laptop charged, because a power cut during an update is a common cause of corruption.
  • Install updates regularly rather than letting months pile up.
  • Upgrade very slow hardware. Updates on an old hard drive can take hours; an SSD makes them far quicker. Our SSD upgrade guide shows how.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Windows update keep failing at the same percentage?

An update that always stops at the same point usually has a corrupted download in the update cache, not enough free space, or a driver conflict. Clear the cache using the commands in step 7, free at least 20GB on the C: drive, and update your network and display drivers. Then run the Windows Update troubleshooter and try again.

Is it safe to delete the SoftwareDistribution folder?

Yes, as long as you stop the Windows Update and BITS services first. The folder only stores temporary update files and history, and Windows recreates it automatically. Renaming it, as shown in this guide, is even safer because you can restore it if needed. You may lose your visible update history, but not your installed updates.

Will "Fix problems using Windows Update" delete my files?

No. According to Microsoft, this option reinstalls the current version of Windows while keeping your apps, files and settings. It is still wise to back up important files first, keep the laptop plugged in and stay connected to the internet. The option may be missing on work-managed PCs or older Windows 11 versions.

Can I stop Windows updates permanently?

You can pause updates for a few weeks from Settings > Windows Update, but stopping them permanently is not a good idea. Updates fix security holes that malware actively uses. A better approach is to keep enough free space, update regularly at a convenient time and set active hours so restarts do not interrupt your work.
