When the electricity goes out on a hot night, a rechargeable charger fan makes a huge difference. They come in many sizes, from small desk fans to large stand fans. Here is how to choose the right one.
1. Size: personal or room fan
- Small desk or clip fans: cool one person at a desk or bed. Light, portable and quiet.
- Medium and large table or stand fans: move more air for a family or a small room, and need a bigger battery.
2. Battery capacity and real backup time
Capacity is shown in mAh or Wh. More capacity means longer backup, but the advertised hours are almost always measured at the lowest speed. At high speed, expect much shorter backup. Read the listing for backup at each speed if it is given.
3. Motor type
Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are quieter, more efficient and last longer than brushed motors. Efficiency directly means more backup from the same battery.
4. Speeds and features
- Several speed levels, or stepless speed control.
- Oscillation (side-to-side movement) to cool a wider area.
- Timer, remote control and night light.
- Adjustable height and tilt for stand fans.
5. Charging
Check how the fan charges (USB-C, DC adapter or solar input) and how long a full charge takes. USB-C fans can charge from a power bank or a phone charger. Some fans can also work as a power bank to charge your phone.
6. Care tips for longer battery life
- Charge the fan fully before the first use.
- Do not leave it fully empty for weeks; top it up every month or so.
- Clean the blades and grille regularly. Dust reduces airflow.
