Heard that you can now get Starlink on a Banglalink SIM without a dish? This guide explains the new Starlink Banglalink SIM satellite-to-mobile service for fishermen, travellers, people in coastal and hill areas, and anyone who wants a backup during cyclones and power cuts. The short answer: Banglalink has launched a Starlink-powered direct-to-cell service that lets an ordinary 4G phone with a Banglalink SIM send SMS and use light data for essential apps where normal mobile towers do not reach. It is for messaging and emergencies, not for fast home internet, and you manage it through the MyBL app.
What Is Starlink Direct-to-Cell on Banglalink?
Normal mobile service depends on towers on the ground. Direct-to-cell (also called satellite-to-mobile or Starlink Mobile) uses Starlink satellites that act like a cell tower in space. A normal 4G phone can connect to them using the operator's mobile spectrum, with no dish, no special handset and no extra hardware.
Banglalink, the country's third-largest mobile operator, is offering this service in partnership with SpaceX's Starlink. Banglalink says Bangladesh is the first country in South Asia to get it.
What Has Been Confirmed So Far
Here is what official announcements and major Bangladeshi newspapers have reported, in order:
- Trial first: before approval, Banglalink ran a two-month proof-of-concept trial, reported to include Bandarban and Sandwip, showing SMS, internet messaging and internet-based voice calls.
- Regulator approval (September 2026): the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) approved Banglalink's proposal, and newspapers reported it on 24 September 2026. The Daily Star described it as approval for a limited Starlink Direct-to-Cell service. A BTRC commissioner told The Business Standard the approval was primarily for SMS and internet service in remote areas.
- Initial scope: SMS and light data, not high-speed mobile broadband. Reports say voice and wider data may come later, subject to technical capability and regulatory approval.
- Launch (October 2026): Banglalink announced the launch in early October 2026. The Daily Star reported the launch on 8 October.
- Starlink alone was not approved: The Business Standard reported that Starlink's separate proposal to offer a similar service directly was not approved. In Bangladesh, you access it through Banglalink.
Because the service is new and the approval is described as limited, details such as coverage, packs and supported features can change. Always check the MyBL app or Banglalink's customer care for the current terms.
Who Can Use It and What You Need
- A Banglalink SIM (prepaid or as Banglalink allows).
- A 4G-capable phone. Reports say no special handset is needed, but not every 4G phone is guaranteed to work; check in MyBL or with customer care if your phone is supported.
- The latest MyBL app, which Banglalink uses to provide the service. Banglalink also said it would come to its RYZE app soon.
- An eligible internet or mixed bundle pack (see the launch offer below).
- A clear view of the sky. Satellite signals do not pass well through roofs, thick walls or dense trees.
How to Use Starlink with a Banglalink SIM
Banglalink has not published a detailed public step-by-step guide that we could verify, so these steps follow what the operator has announced. Follow the instructions inside MyBL if they differ.
- Update MyBL from the Play Store or App Store and log in with your Banglalink number.
- Find the Starlink or satellite offer in the app and read the terms shown for your number.
- Buy an eligible internet or mixed bundle pack if you do not already have one.
- Go where there is no normal network, such as at sea, on a remote char or in hill areas, and stay outdoors with an open sky.
- Wait for the phone to connect, then send SMS or use essential messaging apps. Keep messages short; satellite data is slow compared with 4G.
Be careful with social media videos that tell you to change APN, roaming or VoLTE settings. These are not official instructions and can stop your normal service from working. When you are back in normal coverage, the phone uses Banglalink's regular towers as usual.
Starlink Banglalink Offer at Launch
According to the launch announcement as reported by The Daily Star and Prothom Alo:
- Starlink connectivity is free for the first month with any internet or mixed bundle pack.
- From the second month, it continues at no additional cost with selected monthly internet and mixed bundle packs.
- Customers get five free SMS every month over the satellite network.
We did not find a published price for satellite usage outside these packs, so we have not listed one. Check MyBL for the current list of eligible packs.

Where It Works and What It Cannot Do
Intended areas
Banglalink and the reports name the sea (including deep-sea areas within Bangladesh's Exclusive Economic Zone), remote islands and chars, coastal communities and hill tracts. It is also meant as a backup during cyclones, floods and long power outages, when towers may be down. No detailed public coverage map was available when we wrote this.
Limits to expect
- No video streaming, video calls or heavy browsing.
- Normal voice calls were not part of the initial launch scope.
- Indoors, in a vehicle or under heavy cloud and trees, the connection may be weak or drop.
- Messages can take longer to send than on a normal network.
How to Choose a Phone and Power Backup for Remote Trips
A satellite connection is only useful if your phone has charge. For fishing trips, char areas or disaster preparation:
- Phone: any recent 4G or 5G Android phone with a strong battery is a sensible choice; 5G phones also support 4G. Confirm satellite support with Banglalink before relying on it.
- Power bank: 20,000mAh gives several full phone charges for most phones. Read our power bank buying guide for capacity and safety tips.
- Protection: keep the phone and power bank in a waterproof pouch at sea.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Starlink dish to use it with a Banglalink SIM?
No. The Banglalink service connects your existing 4G phone directly to Starlink satellites, with no dish, router or extra device. The Starlink dish is a separate home or business broadband product sold by Starlink. The phone service is slower and meant for SMS and essential apps, not for streaming or office internet.
Can I make normal phone calls over Starlink with Banglalink?
Not at launch, based on what has been announced. The initial scope is SMS and light data for essential apps. The trial included internet-based voice demonstrations, and reports say voice may be added later if technology and regulatory approval allow. Check MyBL for any update before relying on calls in remote areas.
Is the Starlink service free for Banglalink users?
At launch, it is free for the first month with any internet or mixed bundle pack, then free with selected monthly packs from the second month, plus five free satellite SMS every month. Offers can change, and we found no separate published rate, so confirm current terms in the MyBL app.
Will it work inside my house?
Probably not well. Satellite-to-phone signals need an open view of the sky, so they work best outdoors, on a boat deck or in an open field. Inside a building, a car or under thick trees, the phone may not connect. Where normal Banglalink coverage exists, the phone uses the regular network instead.
