The Biggest Upgrades Explained
1. A20 Pro: Apple's first 2nm chip
The A20 Pro is built on a 2nm process, a full step from the 3nm A19 Pro. Apple claims up to 20% faster CPU performance and up to 40% faster graphics, along with better sustained performance thanks to improved cooling. In daily use, both phones are extremely fast; the gap shows mainly in heavy gaming, long 4K video recording and on-device AI features.
2. Variable-aperture main camera
This is the headline camera change and a first for the iPhone. Instead of a fixed opening, the main lens has blades that change the aperture, so the camera can choose between more light (good for night shots) and a deeper focus range (good for group photos, food and close-ups where you want more in focus). GSMArena lists the range as f/1.5 to f/4.0. Apple also gave app developers access to aperture control. The telephoto and ultrawide cameras are broadly the same as last year.
3. Bigger battery and faster charging
According to GSMArena, battery capacity grows by roughly 500 mAh in both SIM versions. Apple's own figures, reported at launch, put video playback at up to 45 hours on the 18 Pro Max, around six hours more than the 17 Pro Max. Apple also claims 50% charge in about 15 minutes with a suitable charger. These are Apple's numbers; real-world results depend on how you use the phone.
4. Smaller Dynamic Island and new colours
The cut-out at the top of the screen is smaller, the first size change since the iPhone 14 Pro, according to Appleosophy. Colours change to Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.
What we could not confirm
Reports disagree about which modem the 18 Pro Max uses. Some say Apple's own C2 modem is used in the iPhone 18 Pro but not in the Pro Max, while Apple's spec pages do not name the modem. We have left modem claims out of the comparison until this is clear. Also, GSMArena lists the 18 Pro Max at 249 g, noticeably heavier than the 17 Pro Max; check Apple's official spec sheet if weight matters to you.
