Which UPS for PC should you buy in Bangladesh? The short answer: for a normal office or home desktop with one monitor, a 650VA to 850VA offline or line-interactive UPS gives you enough minutes to save work and shut down safely. Gaming PCs and workstations need 1200VA to 1500VA or more. Servers, medical and other critical machines need an online UPS. A UPS is for safe shutdown, not for working through a two-hour outage; for that you need an IPS, a power station or a laptop. This guide explains VA vs watts, the three UPS types and how to estimate backup time.
UPS vs IPS: Know the Difference
A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) switches to battery fast enough that your computer does not restart when the power goes. It usually has a small battery, so backup time is minutes, not hours.
An IPS (instant power supply) runs fans and lights for hours on large batteries. Many IPS units switch over too slowly for a desktop PC, which can restart during the changeover. Do not assume your home IPS protects your computer; check its switchover time with the seller.
VA vs Watts: The Most Important Number
UPS boxes are labelled in VA (volt-amperes), but your PC uses watts. The watt rating is always lower. Many budget offline UPS units are rated at roughly 0.45 to 0.6 watts per VA, so a 650VA model may support only about 300 to 390 watts. Always look for the watt rating on the spec sheet or label, not just the VA.
Estimate your load
| Device | Typical power draw |
|---|---|
| Office desktop (integrated graphics) | 50 to 120 W |
| Gaming PC with graphics card | 250 to 550 W while gaming |
| 22 to 24 inch LED monitor | 15 to 30 W |
| 27 inch or gaming monitor | 25 to 50 W |
| Laptop charger | 45 to 90 W |
Add up the devices you will plug into the UPS, then add 25 to 30 percent headroom. Running a UPS near 100 percent load shortens backup time and battery life. Do not plug laser printers or heaters into a small UPS; their power spikes can overload it.
Offline vs Line-Interactive vs Online UPS
Offline (standby) UPS
Mains power passes straight to the PC. When the power fails, the UPS switches to battery in a few milliseconds. It is the cheapest type and fine for most office and home PCs. Many budget models output a stepped (simulated) sine wave on battery, which most PCs accept for short periods.
Line-interactive UPS
Similar to offline, but with automatic voltage regulation (AVR). When the voltage drops or rises, it corrects it without using the battery. This matters in areas with low voltage in the evening or frequent fluctuations, because the battery is saved for real outages.
Online (double conversion) UPS
The PC always runs from the inverter, so there is zero transfer time and a clean pure sine wave output. It also isolates equipment from spikes and noise. It costs much more and is used for servers, network racks, medical and lab equipment, and high-end workstations.
| Type | Transfer time | Voltage correction | Output on battery | Approx. market price (Taka) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offline 650VA | A few ms | Limited | Often simulated sine | 3,200 to 4,700 | Office/home PC + monitor |
| Offline 1200VA | A few ms | Limited | Often simulated sine | 5,800 to 7,400 | Mid-range or two PCs |
| Line-interactive 750 to 800VA | A few ms | Yes (AVR) | Model dependent | 3,500 to 4,700 | Areas with unstable voltage |
| Online 1kVA (standard backup) | Zero | Full | Pure sine | 20,500 to 30,000 | Servers, critical machines |

How Much Backup Time Will You Get?
Most 650VA to 1200VA UPS units use one or two 12V sealed lead-acid batteries of about 7 to 9Ah. A rough estimate:
Backup minutes = (battery volts x amp-hours x number of batteries x 0.6) / load in watts x 60
The 0.6 factor allows for inverter losses and the fact that lead-acid batteries deliver less at high current. Example: one 12V 9Ah battery with a 150W office PC and monitor gives about (12 x 9 x 0.6) / 150 x 60 = about 26 minutes in theory. In real life, with an older battery and Bangladesh's heat, expect less, often 10 to 15 minutes. That is enough to save and shut down, which is the job of a UPS.
Battery life
UPS batteries usually last around two to three years, less in hot rooms. If backup time drops to a minute or two, replace the battery rather than the whole UPS. Keep the UPS in a ventilated place, off the floor.
Which UPS for PC: Recommendations by Setup
- Office PC + one monitor: 650VA offline or line-interactive.
- Office PC + two monitors, or PC + small printer (not laser): 850VA to 1000VA.
- Gaming PC with mid-range graphics card: 1200VA to 1500VA, preferably pure sine wave.
- High-end gaming PC or workstation: 1500VA to 2000VA pure sine wave, or an online UPS.
- Office server or network rack: online UPS sized for the full rack.
Note on pure sine wave and active PFC
Many modern PC power supplies use active PFC. Some of them do not run well on the stepped output of cheap UPS units and may switch off or make noise on battery. If your PC has a high-wattage power supply, a pure sine wave UPS is the safer choice.
Longer Backup: Power Stations, Laptops and Large Batteries
If you need to keep working through long outages, a regular UPS is the wrong tool. Better options:
- Laptop instead of desktop: a laptop's battery is a built-in UPS. Inspected used business laptops such as the Dell Latitude 5400 (26,900 Taka) run for hours and draw far less power than a desktop.
- Portable power station with UPS mode: the EcoFlow River 3 UPS (27,000 Taka) has a 245Wh LiFePO4 battery and 300W rated output. Its switchover is fast but not zero like an online UPS, so test it with your PC. See more in our power station range.
- Large lithium batteries for IPS or solar systems: our UPS battery range includes the Must LP15-12100 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 (26,500 Taka). Check that your inverter supports lithium batteries before buying.

Do Not Forget the Router
A PC on a UPS is not much use if the internet dies with the power. Routers and ONUs run on low-voltage DC, so a mini DC UPS is cheaper and lasts far longer than plugging them into a PC UPS. We cover sizing in detail in our mini UPS buying guide.
How to Choose a UPS for Your PC
- Add up the watts of everything you will connect, then add 25 to 30 percent.
- Pick a model whose watt rating covers that number.
- Choose line-interactive (AVR) if your voltage often drops or rises.
- Choose pure sine wave for gaming PCs and high-wattage power supplies.
- Check how many battery-backed sockets it has, and that they fit your plugs.
- Ask about warranty for the UPS and the battery separately, and the price of a replacement battery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 650VA UPS enough for my PC?
For an office or home PC with integrated graphics and one monitor, usually yes. These setups draw roughly 70 to 150 watts, well within a 650VA unit's watt rating. A gaming PC with a graphics card can draw 300 watts or more under load, which is too close to the limit, so choose 1200VA or larger.
How long will a UPS run my computer?
Most small UPS units with one 12V 7 to 9Ah battery give about 10 to 20 minutes with an office PC and monitor, depending on load and battery age. The heavier the load, the shorter the time. A UPS is designed for saving work and shutting down, not for working through long outages.
Can I connect my PC to an IPS instead of a UPS?
Only if the IPS switches over fast enough. Many IPS units have a longer changeover time, and a desktop may restart each time the power goes, risking data loss. Laptops are fine on an IPS because of their own battery. For desktops, use a UPS between the IPS and the PC, or check the IPS switchover time.
What is the difference between offline and online UPS?
An offline UPS passes mains power directly to the PC and switches to battery when power fails, with a short transfer gap. An online UPS always powers the PC through its inverter, so there is no gap and the output is clean. Online units cost several times more and are mainly used for servers and critical equipment.
