About the HP EliteBook 840 G5 i5 8th Gen

The 8th Gen Jump to Four Cores

The 8th Gen Core i5-8250U was the first i5 in this thin laptop class with four cores and eight threads. Older 7th Gen i5 chips had only two cores. So the laptop can do more jobs at once without slowing down.

A Proper Business Laptop Series

EliteBook is the top business line from HP, made for offices and frequent travel. The 840 is the 14-inch model, which balances screen space and carrying weight. This unit is pre-owned, so the price is much lower than new.

Simple Storage and Memory Setup

This unit comes with 8GB DDR4 RAM and a 256GB NVMe SSD. That is a balanced setup for Windows, office apps and online classes. If you keep many large files, plan to use cloud storage or an external drive.

Design & Performance

Design and Build

The EliteBook 840 G5 measures about 32.61 x 23.42 x 1.80 cm. It starts at around 1.48 kg, so it fits easily in a normal office bag. The slim body is easy to carry between home, class and office.

The keyboard is backlit and spill-resistant with a drain, which helps if you work in dim rooms. A small spill gets a chance to run out instead of sitting on the keys. Audio is by Bang & Olufsen, and there is an HD webcam for video calls.

Performance in Daily Use

The Core i5-8250U runs from 1.6 GHz and can boost up to 3.4 GHz when you need more speed. With Intel UHD Graphics 620, it handles office work, online classes, YouTube and light photo edits. It is not made for heavy gaming or 3D work.

The NVMe SSD is much faster than an old hard disk. Windows starts quickly, and Word, Excel and Chrome open without a long wait. For connections you get Gigabit LAN, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, USB, HDMI and a headphone jack.

Who It's For

Students on a Tight Budget

College and university students need a laptop for assignments, slides and online classes. The 840 G5 handles these tasks well at a used-laptop price. You can compare other choices in our used laptop collection before you decide.

Office Starters and Small Teams

New office staff often need a laptop for email, reports and accounting software. Small offices may need several such laptops without a big budget. The Gigabit LAN port is useful where the office runs on wired internet.

Home Users and Parents

Many families want one laptop for browsing, bill payments and children's school work. A 14-inch Full HD screen is comfortable for long reading. The 8GB RAM is enough for these normal home tasks.

Simple Buying Guide

Ask About the Battery First

Battery health is the biggest unknown on any used laptop. Ask our team about the battery condition of this unit before you pay. Keep the charger plugged in at your desk if you mostly work in one place.

Think About RAM for the Future

8GB RAM is fine for office work and browsing today. If you plan heavy multitasking later, ask a technician whether more RAM can be added. Check this before you buy, not after.

Compare Generations Fairly

The 840 G5 is an older model than the G6, G7 and G8. Newer generations cost more but can feel faster. Look at the HP EliteBook 840 G6 if you want to compare a newer model.
